  1. 1893-1983. Spanish Surrealist painter, born
  2. in Barcelona. In the mid-1920s he developed a
  3. distinctive abstract style with amoeba
  4. shapes, some linear, some highly coloured,
  5. generally floating on a plain background.
  6. During the 1930s his style became more sombre
  7. and after World War II he produced larger
  8. abstracts. He experimented with sculpture and
  9. printmaking and produced ceramic murals
  10. (including two in the UNESCO building, Paris,
  11. 1958). He also designed stained glass and
  12. sets for the ballet director Sergei
  13. Diaghilev.
