1893-1983. Spanish Surrealist painter, born
in Barcelona. In the mid-1920s he developed a
distinctive abstract style with amoeba
shapes, some linear, some highly coloured,
generally floating on a plain background.
During the 1930s his style became more sombre
and after World War II he produced larger
abstracts. He experimented with sculpture and
printmaking and produced ceramic murals
(including two in the UNESCO building, Paris,
1958). He also designed stained glass and
sets for the ballet director Sergei
Diaghilev.
